We all know radio has contributed to save human lives since the Republic’s and Titanic’s tragic sinkings or the <b> disaster of the airship Italia. What is really the novelty we were waiting for impatiently, is that radio could save the lives of single persons , that is their hearts.
Radio is out of doubt one of the most important inventions of the Twentieth century: it has changed our lives, it has revolutionized information systems, but obviously the thing that “general public” appreciates the most is its entertainment capability. In this field, as in many others, the charm of radio seems to be everlasting: more than a century since its invention it is still one of the tools that keeps company with us the most. We listen to radio when we’re driving, stuck in the city traffic, just to make our travel by car less stressful or when we’re taking a shower to start our day better , as well as it happens that every time we get into a place, into a coffee bar or a restaurant, there is always a background of music welcoming us. The “Magic Box” nearly holds our hands and is a companion in our daily activities, sometimes as a light whisper: one of its “spells” is just making us feel less lonely. When sadness wins the day, sometimes we only need to hear a voice, to listen to a cheerful song on the radio and suddenly, without knowing why, we begin to feel better and that sense of loneliness seems to disappear. The most agree that loneliness is the real sickness affecting time, representing one of the paradox of the Twenty first century: in a permanently changing world, in which the most advanced technologies try to keep people constantly in touch with one another, loneliness often wins the day.
Unfortunately, some people have no family to count on or with whom friends to blow off steam and when at night they go back home from work they have no one with whom to share dinner or have a chat. Then, there are the eternal outcasts of post-modernity, the elderly, that, despite having personal stories, many experiences and cultural backgrounds going beyond what is taught in a book, are turned too often into a burden and find themselves abandoned or alone to face the sunset of their lives. It is to just to them, to lonely people, to outcasts that addresses the new research conducted by some <b>English scholars<\b> that have conceived a particular and innovative use of radio technology known as "Bluetooth".
As some people already know, through the use of a radio frequency, bluethooth technology allows to exchange information at a distance, wireless, between different electronic devices: mobile phone and headsets, pc and mouse, etc. What is less known about this technology is that Bluetooth could soon be used to save a life in case of heart attack. This useful and providential use of Bluetooth is already being tested in Great Britain, to be more precise in the city of Portsmouth. Patients at risk will be implanted under the skin a small device, a microchip; in case of illness, the microchip, conveniently equipped with Bluetooth technology, will be able to send a message with the patient’s medical data and an emergency call to the nearest hospital. Undoubtedly, the application of this technological device would reduce drastically the time of the emergency aid, but mostly it would help those who live alone in the timely request of emergency medical assistance also in the absence of people who take care of them.
The OFCOM, the agency of telecommunications of the United Kingdom, illustrates this one and other predictions for the future of wireless in the recent study Tomorrow's Wireless World. <b>Peter Ingram<\b>, that directs the New Technologies Observatory, in an interview with the Times showed his enthusiasm by saying:
This report shows how wireless technologies can have a creative impact on our everyday life.
